Red Mass

Red Mass, the annual Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit, is celebrated on 1 October. The Mass marks the blessing of the Catholic Church upon members of all the legal professions – judges, barristers, solicitors, sheriffs, legal executives, clerks and legal secretaries from across England and Wales – at the start of the legal year.

The Mass began in medieval times, but was halted during the Reformation. It was revived in 1893 by Catholic lawyers and celebrated in diverse churches in the diocese until settling in Westminster Cathedral – the mother Church of England and Wales. Celebrants in recent years have included the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, auxiliary bishops of Westminster and the Provost of the London Oratory Church.
